Dear horrifically judgemental school,
At first we were able to at least have a bit of a giggle at the fact that, solely for my girlfriend and I, you have created a ‘relationship policy’. The point that you made to us-
- no PDAs
- Focus on your work
- Think about whether your relationship is ‘too intense’
seemed relatively reasonable (aside from the last one which is frankly laughable). But now I cannot help but feel that a line has been crossed. Today, my girlfriend and I were sitting in a classroom together, looking at some work. She happened to be sitting on my lap. This is the kind of thing that happens around the school on a regular basis however with us, the member of staff who walked into that room took a particularly nasty tack. As well as being unnecessarily aggressive, the accusatory tone in his voice was undeniable. He refused to let us talk instead threatening us with ‘you girls need to watch what youre doing very carefully’ and ‘I will be telling the headmistress of what I have seen’. In any co-ed school, with a straight couple, this would be seen as an gross overreaction. The act of sitting on my lap is not one I reserve solely for my girlfriend and so, unsurprisingly, I have been in that situation with a number of straight friends. Yet for some reason, that was deemed completely acceptable.
In the aggressive manner and tone that this staff member used, my girlfriend and I were not only left shaken, but also with an intense feeling of shame for something there’s absolutely no reason to be ashamed about. Not only were we looking at work, but we were not doing a public display of affection. If theres one thing I cant stand more than people attacking me, its people attacking my girlfriend.
Please get some standards that arent homophobic or tyrannical.
Me.
